Gigantic Growing Spheres

Like our smaller growing beads, place these spheres in water and watch them expand about 300 times, producing mega gel-like spheres. You'll love the feel of the slippery, spherical gel! These super-sized spheres start with a diameter of about 1.5cm and grow to a monster diameter of about 7cm.

A truly remarkable absorption demonstration! Can you determine the change in volume, mass and diameter? Add a few drops of food colouring to the water and grow coloured spheres. Try using them as giant squishy lenses in optical experiments and note the magnified, inverted image.

These mega spheres are composed of a super-absorbent polymer, and can be dried and reused. They take between 2 and 3 days in water to reach their maximum size. Because they contain 98% water, the clear spheres will be invisible in water.

How does it work?

Growing spheres are small polymers that have a strong affinity for water. Like a sponge, they swell to about 300 times their size. Simply place the spheres in clean water in a bowl or container and allow them to sit. In 24 72 hours, they will reach their maximum size. If you use warm distilled water or deionized water, the expansion will be even greater.After growth, they can be dried and used again the ultimate in recycling!
