How Does it Work?
The combination of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and borax makes a reaction that creates crosslinks between the polymer chains.
The slime that forms is a non-Newtonian fluid, and is dilatant. This means that under low stress (such as gently pulling), the slime flows and stretches and can form a thin film. Under high stress, such as a sharp, quick pull, the slime breaks. This is also why when you throw a small piece of the slime at the table, it bounces.
The crosslinks between the polymer chains can be destroyed by adding an acid. Add an alkali (a base that dissolves in water) and the slime will be regenerated!
