Seismographs are used by geoscientists to track and record earthquakes. With this seismograph model you can learn how they do this and measure your own earthquakes!
Using a weight attached to a spring, the seismograph is able to pick up slight vibrations. Watch as these vibrations are recorded by a pen attached to the weight that is constantly drawing on a moving piece of paper.
Not only will this model help you to learn about earthquakes and other geological phenomena, you'll also learn how to interpret the results from the seismograph.

How Does it Work?
Full-sized seismographs, or seisometers, measure the motion of the ground supporting them. Both full-sized and model versions rely on a weight attached to a spring. This allows the up and down movement of the Earth to be captured, often through a pen attached to the mass drawing on a moving strip of paper. Seismologists are trained to interpret these recordings to understand whether there have been any abnormalities, such as an earthquake.
