How does it work?

This monster glow stick works like other smaller glow sticks. Just remove it from its packaging, snap it along its length to release the contained chemicals, and shake it until the liquid inside begins to glow. The reaction between the different chemicals in a glow stick causes a substantial release of light energy, this type of reaction is called chemiluminescence. When the chemicals are mixed, the atoms are excited, causing electrons to rise to a higher energy level, on the electrons' return to their normal levels they release energy as light. Try placing identical sticks in containers with water at different temperatures (one hot and one cold with ice), and observe the differences in the brightness of the light given off. How does temperature affect the chemical reaction? The possible uses for these enormous glow sticks are nearly endless!
