Chemistry is the study of matter - the way different materials are put together, and how they are made up of atoms and molecules. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space, so this can be a liquid, a solid or a gas. Chemistry is also the study of how these materials act under different conditions.

Slime is a non-Newtonian fluid. Which means it is neither a liquid or a solid. It can be picked up like a solid, but it also will ooze like a liquid, and it does not have its own shape.

Slime is all about polymers - a polymer is made up of very large chains of molecules. The glue used in slime is made up of long chains of molecules - these chains usually slide past one another easily, which enables the glue to flow, as a liquid (note - the glue in this kit is part of the slime powder).

When the slime powder is mixed with water, a chemical reaction occurs and a new substance is formed - slime! Instead of flowing freely, like glue, the molecules in this new substance have become tangled, in a process called cross-linking. This cross-linking creates a slimy substance, which is great for playing with and which can be used to make Atomic Brain Balls!

You will notice your slime changes its shape to fill whatever container it is placed in. If you pull it slowly it flows quite freely, but if you pull it quickly, it will break, because you are breaking apart the chemical bonds.
