Calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaSO4)2 H20, is commonly known as Plaster of Paris. It has been used as a building material for at least 5000 years and was used by the Egyptians to decorate the burial tombs of pharoahs. It is known as Plaster of Paris as it was originally prepared using the abundant quantities of gypsum found near Paris.

To create Plaster of Paris gypsum rock is heated to 120 degrees, at which point it looses water and becomes a hemihydrate, containing one molecule of water for every two molecules of gypsum.

Plaster of Paris is an excellent material for casting moulds as it does not generally shrink or crack when dry. It is also used in medicine to make plaster casts to immobilize broken bones while they heal.
