Chem Bit - Magic Sand
Hydrophobic sand that stays dry when submerged in water. Awesome science!
Pour the coloured sand into water and sculpt it into beautiful gravity defying formations. Pour the water off and the sand is completely dry, ready for use again.
A fascinating little chemistry kit for young scientists to explore hydrophobics and water polarity.
Age: 8+ with adult supervision
What You Get
Chem Bit - Magic Sand. Twenty-eight grams of pink Magic Sand in a zip lock bag, one small scoop and one spoon. Science ideas and experiments included.
How does it work?
Magic sand starts out as normal sand but is then dyed and covered with a water-repelling polymer that keeps it dry. Pour the magic sand into a small container of water and watch it float, clump and sink. Because of its water-repellent properties, when magic sand is poured into water it holds its shape and can be molded into interesting structures under water. Pour the water off and the sand is still dry, ready to be used again and again.
Compare this pink hydrophobic sand with our contrasting water loving (hydrophilic substances) like instant snow and growing spheres.
