Our Colour Change UV Beads are one of our most popular and successful products. This nifty boxed-kit contains enough beads, thread and instructions to make your own UV colour change bracelet or key ring. The beads stay off-white indoors under regular light bulbs, but take them outside and watch them instantly change colour. How does it work
The beads contained are sensitive to UV light, and change from off-white to a bright array of colours on exposure to the sun or UV rays, even on cloudy days. Take them back indoors, away from UV light and watch them turn back to their original off-white colour. They can change colour and back again thousands of times.
The secret to the bead's magic lies in the structure of their dye molecules. They consist of two large planar conjugated systems that are orthogonal to one another. When high-energy UV light excites the central carbon atom, the two smaller parts form one large conjugated planar molecule. This molecule is large enough to absorb certain wavelengths of light, resulting in colour.
Try putting sunscreen on a bead to see how it effects colour change. How effective is the sunscreen in blocking UV light? How about sunglasses? To what extent do they block UV light?
- The importance of protecting skin/eyes from the sun and its damaging UV radiation.
- The reversible chemical reaction between the pigment inside the beads and UV light that changes the shape of the pigment's molecules and their colour.
- Photochromism: a light-induced reversible change of colour. For example, clear eye glass lenses that transition to dark lenses.
- Experiment by submerging coloured beads in water of different temperatures (lukewarm, hot and ice cold). How does temperature affect the rate at which the beads (or pigment molecules) revert to being colour-free?
The beads change colour within seconds of being exposed to sun or UV light. They do not react to light from light globes and do not, themselves, give off UV radiation. You can even demonstrate the colour changing property of beads indoors using our UV Torch.
