Sodium Alginate Worm Classroom Kit
Enough ooey, gooey chemical worms for the whole class! Scrumptious!
Squeeze a long stream of sodium alginate solution (aka worm goop) into a solution of calcium chloride, and you'll get instant gel worms! You won't believe your eyes as the 'worm goop' changes into a rubbery solid the second the two solutions mix.
This interesting polymer formation (no Borax or PVA used here) is safe to touch and weave between your fingers. The 'hands-on science' factor is great for scientists as young as 4, while the strong content makes the activity engaging for upper-level students and teachers.
This surprising experiment trumps slime with WOW! factor and is a captivating way to explore the science of polymers and solution solubility.
Up to 12 metres of gel worms can be made from this kit, enough for the whole class. In addition 5 mixing cups, 5 forks, and 5 pipettes have been included to thoughtfully accommodate five groups of students.
Age: 4+ with adult supervision.
What You Get
Sodium Alginate Worm Connection Kit. Contains one liter of color changing sodium alginate solution, 25 grams of calcium chloride, 5 mixing cups, 5 forks, 5 pipettes, one small scoop, notes for teachers, and laminated instructions.
How Does it Work?
A hands-on exploration of polymers, this unique experiment demonstrates the formation of long, worm-like polymer chains when sodium alginate and calcium cholride solutions are combined. Easily removed from the calcium chloride solution, sodium alginate worms are super fun to stretch, tickle and examine closer. This slimy and simple science kit also demonstrates the properties of solution solubility, by showing how sodium alginate changes form and shape when mixed within a calcium chloride solution.
