Pamphobeteus antinous is one of the largest of all Tarantulas, with leg spans of up to 27 centimeters recorded.

Pamphobeteus antinous also known as 'Bolivian blue leg birdeater', 'Steely blue leg' or 'Big black tarantula', is a remarkable bird spider due to its size and coloration from the tropical forests of Bolivia and Peru.

Females are blackish, with short olive-black hairs, showing a characteristic woolly appearance and some long red hairs on the abdomen and legs.

Contrary to popular belief, these are not the most poisonous spiders in the world. In fact, a bite from a Tarantula is generally no worse than that of a sting from a bee.

Tarantulas hunt their prey, which includes insects, small rodents and birds, by stalking and hunting them down. Once they insert their fangs into a victim, they release a venom which digests the insides of its prey. Once fully liquefied, Tarantulas suck the remains out of their prey using their fangs in the same manner as a straw.

It is a REAL spider, completely natural, and has not been enhanced or altered in any way.

Comes professionally mounted in a black frame. Great for curious kids, collectors, or classroom units on bugs and insects.

More About The Specimen

This arachnid is REAL and natural! It has not been altered, enhanced or otherwise modified from its natural colour.

Many of the framed insects we carry are ranched/farmed specifically for the purpose, and do not include any species that are regarded as rare or endangered on CITES.

Your purchase actually aids environmental conservation by encouraging the indigenous caretakers to maintain host plant areas.

The frames are not made from real wood. Ethical concerns over deforestation in many third world countries has led to the use of timber substitute framing. All frames have glass fronts with a hook ready to hang. The use of recycled cardboard in the carry boxes also makes this product the complete eco-friendly gift.

Care Of Framed Insects

All frames are fumigated and are professionally prepared however Museum mites may occur. Mites can be detected by the presence of black dust underneath the bug. If this occurs immediately place frame inside a plastic bag and put into freezer for 72 hours. This will kill all mites. Keep framed specimens out of direct sunlight and humid areas.
