Seismic Accelerator - The Multiple Collision Accelerator that works like a real Super Nova! Designed by the famous astrophysicist, Dr Stirling Colgate, the Seismic Accelerator reaches amazing heights when dropped, and demonstrates the laws of conservation of momentum and energy.
This toy has four balls threaded on a rod, with the largest at the bottom and the smallest at the top. When dropped vertically, the bounce energy from the bottom ball is transferred to the next ball, and so on until the energy reaches the top ball - and whoa! You see, the transferred energy increases with each ball, causing the top ball to be blasted off at up to 5 times the drop height!
What you get
A 15cm high Sesimic Accelerator, plastic safety goggles, 2 x spare small red balls. All packed in an attractive gift pack, with a comprehensive teachers guide included.
How does it work
The Seismic Accelerator was designed to demonstrate the awesome kinetic power of a Super Nova. It exhibits the same behavior as a Super Nova (an old star, that having exhausted its nuclear fuel, collapses upon itself in less than a second).
A shock wave spreads out from the centre of the dying star, moving faster and faster and with high intensity as it reaches the less dense layers towards the star's surface. This shock wave accelerates an outermost thin layer of the collapsed star to relativistic speeds, creating 'cosmic rays' that spread throughout our galaxy.
The Seismic Accelerator demonstrates this energy wave of increasing speed by the successively greater impact felt by the smaller, lighter balls nearer the top. The Super Nova explosion and release of cosmic rays is modelled by the top ball of the Astro Blaster shooting into the air at a much greater pace than the original impact.
