Rubber Band Paddle Boat

Price: $9.90

Powered by a rubber band, this solid wooden boat zips across the water. And it is so easy to use. Just wind up the paddle wheel toward the back of the boat, place it in the water and let go. Watch it zoom across the bathtub or cruise in open water. If the rubber band breaks simply replace it with another one included in the box. This classic science toy will last forever!

Age: 5 +

What you get

Wooden boat, approx. 15cm long and 6.5cm wide. Three rubber bands, all in a box.

How does it work?

These boats run on energy stored in the rubber band attached to the paddle wheel. As you wind the paddle wheel, the attached rubber band also winds storing muscle energy. The more you wind the more energy is stored (be careful not to over wind or the rubber band could snap). When released the rubber band unwinds, in-turn causing the paddle wheel to rotate and the boat to move. This is an example of repeatable mechanical deformation (energy is stored by bending or deforming the rubber and released when the rubber returns to its original shape).

Teach

  • Transport.
  • Floating and sinking. The boat floats because the wood it is made from is lighter (or less dense) than the surrounding water.
  • Energy and movement.
  • The difference between potential (or stored) energy and kinetic (or movement) energy.

FAQ
